The Small Business SEO Checklist for 2026
SEO in 2026 rewards businesses that get the fundamentals right and keep them right. You do not need a big budget, you need a repeatable checklist. Here is the exact one we use with our clients at Alloy1Consultants.
1. Technical foundation
- Serve every page over HTTPS with a single canonical host (www or non www, not both).
- Publish a sitemap.xml and reference it in robots.txt.
- Pass Core Web Vitals on mobile (LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms).
- Set a unique title and meta description on every page.
- Add ProfessionalService or LocalBusiness JSON LD with a consistent NAP.
2. Google Search Console and Business Profile
Verify Search Console for both the www and non www properties, submit your sitemap, and use URL Inspection to request indexing of new pages. In parallel, complete your Google Business Profile, choose the correct primary category, and start collecting reviews.
3. On page fundamentals
- One clear H1 per page describing the page in plain language.
- Descriptive H2s that mirror the questions a buyer would ask.
- Internal links from every page back to your core service pages.
- Alt text on every image, describing the image, not stuffing keywords.
4. Content that converts
For a small business, the highest leverage content is a strong service page for each offer, two to four case studies structured as Problem, Solution, Outcome, and a short library of answers to real buyer questions. Publish consistently, even once a month, and internally link every post back to a service page.
"The blog post teaches, the service page sells."
5. Monthly maintenance
- Review Search Console for new impressions and click through rate wins.
- Fix any coverage or Core Web Vitals regressions the week they appear.
- Add one new case study, testimonial, or FAQ per month.
- Ask two happy clients for a Google review.
That is the whole game. Get the foundation right, ship something useful every month, and compound the wins.
