Why Isn't My Website Ranking on Google? A Diagnostic Guide
If your site is not ranking, the cause is almost always one of four things. Work through them in this order and you will find it.
Step 1. Is the site indexed at all?
Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. If nothing comes back, Google either has not crawled the site yet, or something is blocking indexation. Check for a stray noindex meta tag, a Disallow: / in robots.txt, or a canonical pointing to another domain.
Step 2. Can Google discover your pages?
- Submit a sitemap.xml in Google Search Console.
- Use URL Inspection to request indexing of your homepage and top service pages.
- Make sure every page is linked from at least one other page on the site.
Step 3. Does your content match what people search for?
New sites should target long tail and local keywords with keyword difficulty under 30, not head terms. A page titled Web Design will lose to agencies with decades of authority. A page titled Lead Generation Website Design for HVAC Contractors in Atlanta can win.
Step 4. Do you have any authority signals?
- Backlinks from real, relevant sites (even a handful matters early).
- Named testimonials and case studies on your site.
- A verified Google Business Profile with reviews.
- Consistent NAP citations across major directories.
How long should this take?
Onely found that 83 percent of pages are indexed within the first week of publication. If a page is still not indexed after 3 to 4 weeks despite a submitted sitemap and an indexing request, treat it as a technical problem, not normal lag. If pages are indexed but not ranking after 3 to 6 months, the bottleneck is authority and content depth, not technical SEO.
